The wooden block is destroyed in the nature by
itself, but wooden blocks of
Tripitaka Koreana have been preserved, harmonized,
and taken refuge in the
nature. The pivotal key of overcoming nature is
the fixed bar-windows.
On the same wall, sizes of upper and lower bar-windows
are different. In the
front and rear walls of buildings, there are bar-windows
of which sizes are
different.
These differences of bar-windows make air circulate
from the bottom to the
upper in the building. |

Such subtle architectural technology helps dry
air spread insides the building evenly, then exhausted.
This simple
difference maintains air circulation and proper
temperature also.
The block shelf is made of thick, solid and squared
lumber. Blocks are placed like books on the bookshelves
but in
two layers, one on top of another. The block shelf
has five shelves and blocks are arranged closely,
thus, narrow
spaces between blocks produce the stack effect which
affects controlling dampness and temperature greatly. |

The ground of buildings is digged and filled with
soil mixed with charcoal, salt, clay, sand, and
plaster powder.
When it rains, the ground absorbs moisture and when
it drys, moisture in the ground is emitted into
the air. Thus,
dampness is controlled automatically.
In a word, buildings of the House of Tripitaka Koreana
are perfect to control dampness of wood, therefore,
there will
be no need to change the design of buildings even
if we rebuild them. Our ancestors had not only technology
of
drying, tending, and carving wooden blocks, but
also architectural technology that made possible
to preserve blocks
for about a millennium. Therefore, we, descendents,
can meet Tripitaka Koreana as it was and we take
a pride in
that to the world with a great honor.
There was no word of science at that time. However,
our ancestors had their own science from accumulated
experiences, and wonderful ways utilizing and harmonizing
with the nature. When we find our ancestors' science
and
technology from the House of Tripitaka Koreana and
Tripitaka Koreana which are carrying ancestors'
wisdom,
we cannot help admiring and taking pride in them. |
