We can't help feeling almost faint when we remind the
horrible mom-ent during the Korean Civil War that was
a
dog-eat-dog tragedy. As North Korean army hided in the
Gaya Mountain where Haeinsa is located, the headqu-
arters of US army decided to bomb Haeinsa. At that time,
a Korean flight le-ader, Colonel Kim Younghwan reco- |

gnized the important value of Tripitaka
Koreana.
Taking a circular flight over the Hall of Great Tranquility
(the main Dharma hall of Haeinsa), he ordered fighters
not to bomb. When the army headquarters called
Colonel Kim Younghwan because of disobedience to
the order, he took cases of Japan and England as ex-
amples and spoke as follows; during the Pacific War,
US fighters did not bomb Kyoto because they knew
Kyoto is the center of Japanese culture, and when India
was a colony of England, British said that England
would not exchange Shakes-peare for India. Tripitaka
Koreana is very precious heritage for Korean people,
so we couldn't bomb it to sweep out several hundreds
of North Korean army.
For 750 years after completion of Tripitaka Koreana,
although it has experienced wars and fires, the vast
volume of the whole Tripitaka Koreana is preserved just

like it was carved a day ago. It is really mysterious
