Selecting trees for Sutra blocks; a mountain
cherry tree, a wild
pear tree, ... which has less gnarls and smooth texture.
Timbering and conveying.
Sawing into planks; draining and fermenting resin, and cutting
the
board.
Submerging and boiling boards in sea water; to protect boards
from
insects, splitting, and bending.
Drying in the shade.
Planing and cleaning the board smoothly.
Engraving Sutras on wooden blocks; to be even the style of
handwriting, a trained calligrapher writes Sutras, then, a
skillful
craftsman engraves on the blocks.
Finishing the end of a block; to prevent warping, splitting,
colliding,
and to ventilate smoothly. This process is to put the square
wooden
club which is thicker than the Sutra block on four sides and
decorating four corners with copper plates.
Vanishing with lacquer; to prevent corrosion. This is the
last
process.
The completed Sutra block is stored in the House of Sutra
Block
where ventilation, temperature, and humidity are controlled
properly.
