Tripitaka was carved two times in the Koryeo Dynasty as the nation-
al enterprise. The First Tripitaka was carved in 1011 AD from utmost
wish to drive away Khitan by virtue of the Buddha's great power and
took as many as seventy seven years from 1011 AD to 1087 AD.

The First Tripitaka was the perfect one compared with the Chinese Tripitaka.

In 1232 AD, Mongolian army burned down the First Tripitaka. In 1236 AD, Koryeo begun to another Tripitaka enterprise
once more, and finished in 1251 AD. It took sixteen long years and the result of the second Tripitaka enterprise is Tri-
pitaka Koreana enshrined in Haeinsa now.

Tripitaka Koreana boasts of it's vast volume, and excellent quality. Characters on blocks show even shapes and
sizes like one skilled man carves the whole blocks. The famous calligrapher of Joseon, Chusa Kim Junghi admired
Tripitaka characters as "A man did not engrave these characters, but a supernatural being did." In addition to, there
are no wrong or missed characters, and condition of wooden blocks is perfect as if blocks were carved in modern
times. Therefore, the world is unsparing of it's praise to Tripitaka Koreana as "the culmination of wood-block printing"
and "a mystery of the world."
